Como anota el profesor René R. Khawam en el prólogo a de esta magna obra, de Las mil y una noches, agitadora obra maestra donde las haya, reconocida y celebrada como tal desde hace casi siete siglos , no teníamos aún una edición
satisfactoria, es decir, fiel a los manuscritos antiguos, los únicos fiables; algo injusto a todas luces. Es por ello que, desde 1965, el profesor Khawam inició un minucioso proceso para establecer una edición fiable, filológicamente rigurosa y literariamente bellísima de la que sin duda es una de las mayores obras de la literatura universal. Recurriendo a los manuscritos originales, el principal de los cuales se remonta al siglo XIII, Khawam ha hecho una impecable versión que descarta algunos episodios añadidos sobre todo en el siglo XIX y recupera en cambio otros que hasta ahora permanecían inéditos. Algo inaudito, tratándose de una de las obras literarias más célebres y leídas en los últimos siglos.
